The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is named for its black-spotted coat. This seal is sometimes called the sea leopard, and the resemblance is more than skin deep. Like their feline namesakes, leopard seals are fierce predators. They are the most formidable hunters of all the seals and the only ones that feed on warm-blooded prey, such as other seals. Leopard seals use their powerful jaws and long teeth to kill smaller seals, fish, and squid. These effective predators live in frigid Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters, where they also eat penguins. They often wait underwater near an ice shelf and snare the birds just as they enter the water after jumping off the ice. They may also come up beneath seabirds resting on the water surface and snatch them in their jaws. Shellfish are a far less dramatic prey but still an important part of the leopard seal’s diet. They have long bodies (10 to 11.5 feet/3 to 3.5 meters) and elongated heads. Like most other seals, leopard seals are insulated from frigid waters by a thick layer of fat known as blubber. There has been one documented human fatality by a leopard seal.

“Be quick about it. I don’t want to wait long once I finish eating.” He was taking his sweet time to eat though, so if she hurried she’d have a chance to eat something beforehand. He thought that was kind enough of him.

Veser felt terrible at having run from Ples’. He’d broken his promise to him, and it made his insides twist in guilt. He wanted to go back and apologize to him, he’d rather sit and listen to Ples lecture him for hours, have him drill math into his head until it hurt rather than do what he was about to do. But mostly he wanted to go back and unbreak his promise. He worried that this would make the older man hate him, though maybe it was for his own good, at least then he’d not be hurt, right? He didn’t want Ples to get involved with his dad.

Letting out a deep sigh as he stopped and stood in the driveway, he stared at the house. The one he grew up in. His breath heavy and strained as he walked towards the door. Every part of his mind screaming at him to run, run run away. But she needed him. She was alone with that torment. He’d eventually hurt her wouldn’t he? And as much as he hated his mother for never loving him, he still felt pity for her.. a desire to help her be free of the person they both loathed and despised more than anything.

So he reached under the doormat, unlocked the door. Moved through it as though in a dream that felt more like a nightmare as his hands shook in fear. His footsteps sounding loud to his own ears even though they were muffled by the carpet. He stopped. Stopped when he saw him. Sitting there at the table eating. Those horrible eyes lifting up to see him from across the room, his heart pounding in his ears, barely aware of his mother standing nearby. He could see nothing but the fury in the eyes of his father.

Inside the house, Mrs. Hatch had been just about to turn away from her husband with a nod, when there was the sound of the front door opening. She lifted her head, looking up to where Veser was entering the house. He froze up when he saw his father, and for a moment Mrs. Hatch felt her heart clench and skip a beat.

…No… No, no, this was terrible timing. The selkie looked between her husband and her son, a sense of paralyzing fear welling up. She was frozen, standing there between the two of them as the seconds ticked past.
